Kid's Lunches. Where, oh where, do I begin? It's really not an easy task to pack a good lunch. I know that I have been packing my daughter's lunch for 2 years now and I've definitely learned a couple of things along the way: 1. Food needs to look appealing and fun to eat. There have been too many times that she's come home with almost her whole lunch still in the bag because she "didn't want to eat it." 2. Lunches need to be filled with healthy foods! Kids need energy and there is no better way to give them that energy than by filling their lunches full of vitamin and nutrient-rich foods! 3. Do you realize how many disposable sandwich and snack bags it takes to pack a child's lunch for 2 years straight? A lot! So many. Too many. It's ridiculous, really.
So, that's why when I heard that I was chosen to participate in the Build A Better Lunch Campaign with Rubbermaid, Jif and Smucker's I was stoked. I immediately headed to Target to grab all of my lunch-building items so I could begin working on something amazing! The challenge I presented myself with was going to be to come up with 3 creative, fun and cute bento-style, healthy lunch ideas featuring peanut butter & jelly sandwiches as the main star! No more boring old sandwich. These would have to be cute, creative and make my daughter say "I can't wait to eat this lunch!" Here's the cast of characters:
Rubbermaid LunchBlox Kits - These are amazing! I can't even tell you how exciting it is to know that I won't have to waste thousands of disposable plastic bags anymore! These awesome little "blox" snap together and create the best lunch container ever. The sandwich kit includes a sandwich box, two small snack containers and a larger "side dish" container. It even comes with a sheet of blue ice that can be frozen, stacked between your containers, and will keep your food nice and cold! {You can also download a coupon (good until December 31, 2013) for $2 off your LunchBlox Kits here}
Smucker's Strawberry Jam - We all know strawberry is the best flavor of jam. Right?!
Jif Creamy Peanut Butter - I'm actually a crunchy girl at heart, but for some reason creamy was calling my name this time!
Flower Garden:
{A beautiful peanut butter and jelly flower cut out with a large, flower-shaped cookie cutter is nestled in these LunchBlox along with some adorable little cucumber & carrot daffodils made with smaller flower cookie cutters.}
Ant Crossing:
{"Ant" Raisins make their way across a celery "bridge" to see what's on the other side of this peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Ants could also use Pretzel "twigs" to get from one place to another.}
Fish Bowl:
{Atop this pb&j sandwich, sweet little fish hide among the "seaweed" lettuce and raisin rocks adorn their cozy little fish bowl.}
Here's a fun printable game for you to cut out and put in with your child's lunch! {click image to download}
